Friday night was just more of the same for top ranked Calhoun City. The Wildcats overwhelmed another 2A competitor to remain unbeaten on the season heading into the Class 2A North semifinals.
South Delta was the opponent at the Wildcats’ mercy Friday night. After a relatively slow start in sub-freezing temperatures, the Wildcat train got rolling in the second quarter behind QB Chakel Gates and RB Brieton Sykes as they powered the orange and black to a 49-0 victory.
Gates rushed for a team-leading 138 yards and two touchdowns. Sykes added another 81 yards and two touchdowns.
After big runs by Gates and Sykes, it was Jadarius Glass who put the first points on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run.
Sykes scored both of his touchdowns in the second quarter on runs of 26 and 27 yards for a 22-0 lead at the break.
Jaalen Thomas opened the third quarter with an 11-yard touchdown run.
Gates would follow with his two scoring runs of six and 15 yards.
Jo Gray added the final touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard run.
The Wildcats, 12-0, will return home next Friday for the Class 2A semifinals where they will host rival Bruce, 5-7.
‘City defeated Bruce 56-15 in the regular season matchup.
