Former Bruce Trojan Donta Armstrong has spent the past few months in Madison training in hopes of getting a shot to play in the national Football League.
“I’ve been training hard, trying to improve in all areas, especially my speed,” said Armstrong. “I’m just hoping for a chance to live my dream.”
Armstrong has been working out with other NFL prospects under the direction of R.J. Barrett and Jermey Evans.

“It’s been a lot of hard work, doing all I can to prove myself,” Armstrong said. “I had a great pro day, a really great response, so we’ll see.”
This year’s NFL Draft begins April 26. Most professional draft services currently project Armstrong will either be a very late round pick, or more likely, a free agent signed after the draft with a chance to come into a team’s camp and try to earn a spot on someone’s roster.

“Obviously it’s every player’s dream to hear your name called in the draft, but if it doesn’t happen I’m still going to be prepared,” Armstrong said. “I’m just looking for an opportunity. I want that chance to prove myself, to prove the doubters wrong.”
“I’ll be thankful for whomever picks me, signs me, whatever,” he said.
Armstrong earned All America honors as a wide receiver at West Alabama this past season. He had nearly 80 catches for 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns in 2017. He was also their top punt returner.

“I had a great career at West Alabama,” Armstrong said. “I’m thankful for all the support there, for winning my first ring there (Gulf South Conference Title) and getting a great education.”
Armstrong is scheduled to walk across the stage this May to receive his bachelor’s degree.
“My intention is to be back on campus in May to walk across there and get that diploma,” Armstrong said. “That was very important to me and my family.”

In the meantime, he’ll be waiting to hear from an NFL team on where he might get his next opportunity.
“It’s a waiting game now,” Armstrong said. “I’m trying to be patient because I can’t control any of this now. I’m just looking for a chance. That’s all I need.”
