The Vardaman Rams improved to 2-1 on the season with Patrick Pratt leading the way in a 39-0 rout of visiting Coldwater last Friday night.
Pratt opened the scoring with a touchdown run on the opening series of the game for a 7-0 lead. Less than a minute later he was back in the end zone after returning an interception, the 17th of his career, for a touchdown.
“Patrick was outstanding on both sides of the ball,” Vardaman Coach Larry Gann said.
Kody Townsend carried the Rams back to the end zone to stretch the first quarter lead to 20-0.
Trae Owen would account for the next two scores – first rushing for a touchdown then passing to Pratt for another.
Michael Williams scored the final touchdown for the 39-0 advantage at the half. The teams agreed to run the clock the second half for a quick two quarters.
“Coldwater is still coming back after restarting their football program,” Gann said. “I was pleased with our effort, in particular on defense, but not as much with the execution on the offensive side.”
“We’re continuing to make too many mistakes that will come back and get us against better competition,” Gann said. “We didn’t need to throw it much Friday, but we will going forward and we have to execute in that area better than we have thus far.”
The ground game was strong for the Rams, Gann said, but consistency is lacking.
“We’re hustling. We just aren’t making consistent plays,” he said. “As the intensity picks up moving into region play, we have to eliminate all these mistakes and play consistent football.”
The Rams host French Camp this Friday. After a season opening win over Winona Christian, the Panthers have lost their last two to Starkville Academy and Eupora.
They are led by junior quarterback Holman Edwards.
“He’s good both in and out of the pocket,” Gann said. “They will present multiple challenges for us Friday.”
