There is a lot of newness to the 2013 Vardaman Rams. Coach Larry Gann returns for his second stint as leader of the VHS football program, having first coached there from 1979-84.

Coach Larry Gann

“It’s the same ole, same ole for me,” Gann said. “It’s  different kids, but they still work really hard. I’m excited to be back.”
He has named Brandon Walker as the Rams’ starter at QB?entering week one. Chase Owen and Brandon Washington will also see playing time. It’s the biggest question mark entering the season after losing 3-year starter Cody Jenkins to graduation.

Who’s Back: Offensive starters: 2, Defensive starters: 3

Team Strength: Coach Larry Gann said defense should be a strength for the Rams despite all the new faces. He intends to implement a “50” concept defense that can easily adapt to the different styles of offense they will face.

Biggest Concern: Inexperience is the biggest concern entering the season, especially on offense. The Rams don’t have a QB on the roster that has taken a snap in a varsity game.

Offensive Leaders: Sophomore Tavis Townsend returns in the backfield. He rushed for nearly nine yards a carry last season.

Defensive Leaders: Junior Kent Casey led the Rams’ in sacks last year among those returning in 2013.

Others to Watch: Leo Rojo and John Moore will lead the Vardaman offensive and defensive lines. Quon Cummings is viewed as the best all-around athlete on both sides of the ball.
