The Calhoun Academy Cougars enter the 2013 season ranked as high as fifth in the state in some preseason publications. They are coming off the school’s best season ever last year in which they lost to Russell Christian in the 8-man state championship. But after losing most of the team to graduation, the Cougars are expected to have a more challenging time reaching those heights in 2013.

Coach Tim Melton

Hebron and Kemper are expected to be the primary challengers within district play.

Who’s Back: Offensive starters: 3, Defensive starters: 2

Team Strength: The Cougars’ offensive line is expected to be a strength of the team. “We average 240 pounds across the front. That’s big in our league,” Coach Melton said.

Biggest Concern: Special teams is among the larger concerns for the Cougars after losing Cory Baggett to graduation. He averaged more than 40 yards per punt. “We don’t know yet who will be punting for us,” Coach Melton said.

Offensive Leaders: Senior Cameron Bryant (TE/DE) is the Cougars leading scorer returning from last season. He had three touchdown receptions in 2012.

Defensive Leaders: Junior Austin Brown recorded four sacks in 2012, most among all players returning this season.

Others to Watch: Senior Rhett McCormick leads the Cougars on both the offensive and defensive lines.
