Vardaman Lady Rams, Calhoun City Wildcats climbing in state basketball rankings

Two Calhoun County basketball teams are currently ranked in the top four in their class.
The Vardaman Lady Rams, 9-3, are ranked fourth in Class 1A by the Clarion-Ledger.
“We’re honored they’ve got us there, but we’re not where we need to be yet,” Lady Rams Coach Deanna Winter said. “We need to get in better shape for the more fast pace teams we play and better with our man-to-man defense for the slower style teams.”

The Lady Rams charged pass Eupora 79-48 last Friday night with Shylysses Rimmer and Brittany Hawkins both scoring 18.
Earlier last week, they defeated Mantachie 68-43 with Rimmer scoring 22 and Alaysia Madkins and Chasady Holmes 13 each.
The county’s other ranked team is the Calhoun City Wildcats who improved to 9-2 with wins over Bruce and Noxubee County last weekend.

The Wildcats are ranked third in Class 2A behind unbeaten West Tallahatchie and division opponent Okolona.
Coach Daren Coffey said he was less concerned about the rankings and more focused on seeing his team improve.
“Our guys are working really hard right now,” Coffey said. “What I like best about this team is we still have so much room to grow. That’s what we’re trying to accomplish, getting better sevsery time we take the floor.”

The Wildcats made easy work of rival Bruce last Friday night winning 99-65. Tyius Jennings led all scorers with 28 points. Ladavius Draine added 23, Brieton Sykes 19 and Jarvis Heard 14 for the Wildcats.
Justin Flemons led Bruce with 21. Raquerrius Spicer scored 19 for the Trojans.
Saturday in the Loggins’ Shootout, the Wildcats defeated Noxubee County 78-69. Draine scored 22, Sykes 21, Heard 16 and Jennings 13.

Bruce lost to Shannon in the Loggins’ Shootout 81-47. Flemons scored 19 and Spicer 10 to lead the Trojans, who dropped to 6-3 on the season.
Earlier last week, Bruce defeated Coffeeville 74-58. Flemons scored 28, Spicer 18 and Walt Maddox 13 for the Trojans in the win.
The Calhoun City Lady Wildcats, 8-1, defeated the Bruce Lady Trojans 76-40 Friday night.
Tyra Tucker scored 21 to lead all scorers. Mykeria Holland added 15 and Maya Armstrong 14 for ‘City. Kalisha Parks led Bruce with 10.

In action earlier last week, the Lady Wildcats dominated Houlka 70-37. Tucker led with 22 points. Maya Armstrong added 14 and Shartesia Cousins 12.
The Lady Trojans defeated Coffeeville last Tuesday 64-57. Abbie Patton led with 15 points. Ladestiny Carter scored 11 and Jakina Steen 10.
The Vardaman Rams fell to Eupora 56-34 last Friday with Patrick Pratt scoring 10 for VHS.
The Rams lost to Mantachie 57-56 earlier last week. Wesley Casey led the Rams with 23 points.
