Multi-sport athletes are common at small high schools, but it’s rare that an athlete excels at her sports at the level of Conley Langford.
Langford began playing basketball in the Upward system when she was five and took to softball at age seven in summer league. At age nine, she began travel ball and has played in locations across the country. Now, as a senior, she is a standout as a senior in both sports for Calhoun City High School.
Balancing the requirements of basketball and softball can be challenging, but that’s a challenge that Langford accepts with pride.
“I balance multiple sports by getting plenty of rest and staying organized with my schedule,” Langford said. “I’ve always been driven to do my best, and that helps me be successful.”
Although she admits that basketball is her favorite of the two sports, Langford sets goals prior to each season and tries to put in the work to make them a reality.
“As you know, we ended our basketball season as state runner-up this past year,” Langford said. “We were really hoping to defend our championship title, but we fell short to a really good New Site team. As far as softball is concerned, we have a very young team, and I hope that everyone plays to the best of their potential. My goals for my senior softball season are coming together as a team, playing hard, good communication and finishing strong.”
As far as what’s necessary to reach this place this season, Langford believes that the key lies in hard work.
“To reach these goals, I will have to be disciplined and work hard,” Langford said. “As a senior, it’s my responsibility to lead by example with a good attitude and strong work ethic.”
Langford recently had a change of heart concerning her plans following high school, but she is planning to continue her road in athletics.
“I had several JUCO offers for basketball and softball and one basketball offer from a four-year college,” Langford said. “After careful consideration, I plan to further my career in basketball at Northwest Mississippi Community College. The decision was a difficult one, but I really feel good about it.”
