The Calhoun County basketball season continued this week with action from all four schools.
Bruce basketball took on Amory and Columbus this week and lost all three games that were played. The Lady Trojans fell to Amory on Friday by a final score of 80-51 and were led in scoring by Ashuntay Harris with 13 points. The boys fell later that night 59-43 and were led in scoring by Hayden McCostlin with 19. The Bruce boys took on Columbus on Saturday as a part of the Bobby Ford Shootout and fell 72-21. Amari Armstrong led the Trojans with seven points.
Calhoun City basketball enjoyed an undefeated week, with their girls’ and boys’ teams knocking off Winona and Noxubee County and the Lady Wildcats defeating Saltillo.
The Lady Wildcats started the week with a win at Winona 65-20. Ajala Mays had 12 points in the victory, Conley Langford scored 11 and Makynzy Campbell and Zakyja Brand scored 10 apiece. The Calhoun City boys also picked up a win over Winona on Tuesday 81-51 behind 20 points from Jayvian Shaw and 19 from Jalen Mays.
City also had strong scoring performances from the aforementioned players against Noxubee. In the Lady Wildcats’ 69-33 win, Ajala Mays dropped 24 along with Conley Langford’s 15. The Wildcats countered with a win of their own 82-61 behind 20 points from Jayvian Shaw and 11 from Jalen Mays and Ramauri McGuirt.
The Lady Wildcats also participated in the Dossett Big 4 Shootout, knocking off Saltillo 49-40 on Monday. Mays and Langford once again led the team in scoring with 14 and 13 respectively, and Nashira Jennings scored 10.
Vardaman basketball continued their season this week with matchups against Myrtle, South Pontotoc and Thrasher. The Rams and Lady Rams hosted Myrtle on Tuesday and picked up one win and one loss. The Lady Rams pulled off a 58-51 win over the Lady Hawks behind scoring efforts from Malaysia Suasti with 18 points, Makynlie Jones with 17 and Caroline Casey with 11. The Rams fell on the same night to Myrtle by a final of 75-25 with 12 points from Landon Logan.
Friday night brought South Pontotoc to Vardaman and two losses for the VHS teams. The Lady Rams fell to the Lady Cougars by a final score of 42-35 but garnered 12 points apiece from Malaysia Suasti and Sarab Wooten. The Rams also fell to South Pontotoc 57-26 and were once again led in scoring by Landon Logan with eight points. Vardaman’s boys also participated in the TCPS tournament against Thrasher on Monday and fell 64-57 to the Rebels behind 20 points from Jadarius Shaw.
Calhoun Academy took on Humphreys Academy and Pine Grove this week. In the girls’ game against Humphreys, the Academy was led by Keegan Hubbard with eight points and Ashley Perrigan with six. The boys were led by Levi Gosa and Coben Parker with 16 apiece.
The boys also participated in the TCPS tournament on Monday, falling to Pine Grove 81-66. Gosa and Parker once again led the team in scoring with 29 and 21 points respectively.
