The Bruce Trojans defeated Coffeeville 20-6 last Friday for their first win of the season and the first for Clint Faust as a head coach.
“We played hard and executed a lot better than we had,” Faust said. “Overall, we’re growing as a team gaining much needed experience every week.”
Cade Spratlin, who quarterbacked the Trojans last season, returned this week and split time with Trent Hall, who started the first two games.
Bruce vs Coffeeville 5“They’re alternating series at quarterback,” Faust said. “It’s a competition going forward and we’ll play the hot hand.”
Faust said they both play linebacker on defense so the rotation works for them because he can talk to the one who isn’t in about offensive adjustments while on the sideline.

“We’re going to keep going forward with this unless someone wins the job outright,” Faust said.
Quinn Davis opened the scoring for the Trojans against Coffeeville with a 36-yard touchdown run early in the second half, but the Pirates answered with a touchdown seconds later to tie the game at six.
“It was a busted play where we didn’t get lined up correctly,” Faust said of the Pirate touchdown. “There was a lot of confusion because they had 12 players on the field.”

“Overall, defensively I thought we played a lot better. We definitely tackled a lot better,” Faust said. “We forced five turnovers. That’s always a positive.”
The Trojans answered the Coffeeville score with a touchdown by DeAvion Cullin from nine yards out. Spratlin threw for the 2-point conversion for a 14-6 advantage.
Spratlin would pass to Tre Wofford for a 19-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter for the final points in the 20-6 win.
“We still have a lot to improve on,” Faust said. “Our execution on offense wasn’t near where it needs to be. We had a lot of illegal formation penalties because we weren’t lining up correctly. It’s a product of our youth that we have to overcome quickly.”

Faust noted the Trojans only have five players on the roster that have played as many as eight high school football games.
“We need to gain a lot of experience fast,” Faust said.
The Trojans travel to Water Valley this Friday to play the Blue Devils, where Faust coached as an assistant for more than a decade.
“There’s a lot of history between Bruce and Water Valley, and we know they’ll be up to play us,” Faust said. “We need to match that and come out and execute effectively on both sides of the ball.”
