Calhoun City started the 2013 football season like the top ranked Class 2A team in the north should, with a blowout victory. They dominated the Coffeeville Pirates for a 45-6 win.
Cartin McBride set up the first touchdown with a 40-yard run to the Pirate 3-yard line.
The Wildcats led 7-0 until midway through the second quarter when QB Chakel Gates hit Andrekus Ezell with a 55-yard pass. Three plays later Gates ran into the end zone from three yards out for a 14-0 Wildcat lead.
Jordan Pratt returned the second half kickoff 70 yards to set up another Calhoun City score. There was a 30 minute delay in between, however, due to lightning in the area.
When play resumed, Gates passed to Brieton Sykes for a 15-yard touchdown and a 21-0 lead.
McBride found the end zone a few minutes later on a 3-yard run to extend the ‘City lead to 27-0.
Among the other scores for the Wildcats was a 35-yard touchdown run by J’Shon Coleman.
The Wildcats will open the home schedule next Friday when they host Houston.
