Predictions for the Bruce Trojans in preseason publications have ranged from fourth in their region, to fourth in the state. With only three starters returning on offense and defense, Coach James Ray said the key will be to keep it simple and let his talented young players gain experience and make the plays they’re capable of.
“We have really good players, they’re just young,” Ray said. “We need to keep a simple approach, but play fast and let our talent come through.”
Who’s Back: Offensive starters: 3, Defensive starters: 3
Team Strength: Coach James Ray believes the Trojans’ greatest strength entering the 2013 is team speed. “I believe this is the fastest team we’ve had in several years,” Ray said.
Biggest Concern: Returning only three starters on both sides of the ball leaves an experience void for the Trojans. “Leadership and a lack of experience is definitely a concern,” Ray said. “How we respond when we’re challenged is something we have to see in a live game.”
Offensive Leaders: Senior Donta Armstrong takes over at QB. He was 4-9 for 87 yards as a backup last year. He contributed almost 8 yards a carry and was the team’s third most productive receiver.
Defensive Leaders: Jay Johnson at DE should provide plenty of heat for opposing QBs. Zack Cruthirds leads a quick LB corp. DJ Glaspie is a playmaker in the secondary.
Others to Watch: Darrian Sullivan, Jadarrius Benson, Tabias Campbell and Bailey Nix all big play capable.
