Bruce Trojans’ Raquerius Spicer has one of the more interesting looking shots you’ll see on the basketball court and thus far this season it’s working for him.
The senior is leading a young Trojan team averaging 25 points a game.
“My teammates, I’ve got to give them the credit,” Spicer said of his high point totals so far this season. “They’re putting me in a good position to score.”

Deshontin Malone, a freshman, is averaging 18 points per game for the Trojans. He credits the defense the team is playing for his opportunities.
“Our defense is probably the strongest thing we’ve got,” Deshontin said.

Coach Willie Mays agrees.
“We’re young but they’re aggressive,” Mays said of his team. “They play hard and they play together.”
Spicer agreed noting that leadership is key to this year’s team and important as they look to improve.
“We’ve got to take care of the ball better and rebound,” Spicer said. “Boxing out and rebounding are important.”

Malone is a natural shooter, but said he wants to work on ball handling to reach his goal of helping the Trojans get to state.
“That’s where we want to go,” he said.
Malone appears unphased by the older competition early on as a freshman.
“I don’t think about it,” he said. “Just like in junior high, I just go out there and play.”

Coach Mays has been pleased with that play thus far from his entire team. The Trojans employ the full-court, fast-paced game that Mays likes.
Cannon-Motors“I like our intensity. We get up and down the floor,” Coach Mays said. “The defensive pressure has been real high. We’re getting a lot of easy baskets and we’re playing a lot of guys. Going six deep on the bench.”
“If we can continue to do that and maintain our intensity, we’re going to put up a lot of points.”

The Trojans are averaging 90 points a game thus far, but Spicer said they’re not focused on the scoreboard.
“Keep hustling,” he said. “That’s what it takes. Just keep hustling.”
